Courses - Maritime Radio (VHF)

Course Description

Prerequisite: None. Open to the general public.

Learn the phonetic alphabet, as well as correct radiotelephone operation procedures. This course will enable you to pass Industry Canada's Restricted Radiotelephone Operator's Certificate Exam which is included in the course.

Course Materials

The following course materials are provided on the first night of class.
  • Student Notes - The Radio Talk Seminar Textbook

Please bring with you a pencil, an eraser and a notebook to take notes.

  1. Maritime Mobile Service
    Regulations, licensing, requirements, documentation.
  2. Procedures
    Use of Marine radio, word usage, phonetic alphabet, calling procedures, priority of messages.
  3. Distress Communication
    Priority, frequency to be used, distress/Mayday call procedures, examples of distress calls.
  4. Urgency Communications
    Priority, frequency to be used, urgency/Pan Pan procedures, examples of urgency calls.
  5. Safety Communications
    Priority, frequency to be used, safety/Securite procedures, examples of safety calls.
  6. Distress Simulations
    Distress/Mayday scenarios.
  7. Additional Information
    Emergency equipment, electronic equipment information, alternative radio services.
  8. Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS)
