Change of Watch - Graduation Dinner

May 31st saw a gathering of 52 Royal City Squadron members and guests at the Best Western Coquitlam Inn for the annual Graduation dinner and Change of Watch. A lovely and plentiful hot and cold buffet dinner was enjoyed by all in the Palm Room thanks to the hotel’s very capable catering and serving staff.

Graduating Boating ClassGuest of honour, Rhonda Jones, Pacific Mainland District Commander led the swearing-in ceremonies of the 2002-2003 graduating class and the 2003-2004 Bridge members aided by Past Commander Glen Blake and Training Officer Al Cumiford. Congratulations to our newest graduates of Safe Boating and Piloting, and all those who renewed their vow to maintain “the course”.

Bent Prop Award Recipient Harold Wright
The “Bent Prop Award” was activated this year and the winner was none other than our Head Training Instructor and Historian, Harold Wright. Those curious parties who were not present this evening could probably obtain details directly from the Stan Giles, Sr., Rick Doig, or Len Lambert!

A big “thank you” to the donors of our door prizes. The donations were varied and everyone is urged to support the businesses who were again so very generous in helping to complete our delightful evening. Sponsor List.

9th Annual Pitt Lake Cruise

The Pitt Lake Cruise was about as good as it gets. The weather was perfect. Ran and Alley were, as usual, great hosts and even Patrick, getting a little more used to losing, didn’t grizzle as much when Glen and Barb were anointed the new Bocce Champs. Even with two last minute cancellations 14 boats took part in the cruise and 33 people sat down to dinner.

FIRST ANNUAL (AGAIN) FISH FRY

What a glorious early fall day gracing our revisited annual Fish Fry! Sunday, September 21st saw a large group of members and their families gather at 2003 Fish FryQueens Park in New Westminster to visit, network, and consume copious amounts of fish and homemade fries. The air was filled with the wonderful aromas of vinegar and ketchup as everyone chose their favorite accompaniments.

A very special and enormous “thank you” goes to STAN GILES, JR. who did all the cooking of fish using his special batter recipe, and to AL CUMIFORD and HAROLD WRIGHT who were the potato experts and servers. Thanks also to CHANTAL HUDSPETH and MARLENE GILES and others unnamed, who volunteered as “gophers”. Many hours were spent by these members to provide the equipment, shop for all the supplies, build our Squadron a sturdy table for this purpose, chop and cook, and finally the clean-up.

The minimal cost was $8.00 for adults and $4.00 for children 10 and under ~ it’s a marvelous value considering the abundance of great food available to all, and the great venue for a get-together. The only thing we can’t take credit for is the superb weather this day.

Thanks again to those members named above, your Squadron looks forward to the “Second Annual Fish Fry” in 2004!

October Social with Peter Vassilopoulos

Royal City Squadron's first social of the 2003 Fall/Winter season took place at Century House on Monday, October 20th featuring well-known author and speaker, PETER VASSILOPOULOS. Christmas Social and Food Bank Drive

Members, note on your calendars that our next get-together is Monday, December 15th for our Christmas Social at the "Oak Room" at Century House. The 2002 format was very enjoyable and so we will once again have a "Wine & Cheese" coupled with our local Food Bank drive. Everyone is welcome to donate a prize to be included in our Door Prize Draw too. Our guest speaker(s) for the evening will be Noreen Rudd and David Hoar, authors of "Cooks Afloat!" so come and join your Bridge and fellow members for a cozy evening!
