February Social with Bruce Whittington
Our first social gathering in the new year was held at Century House on
Monday, February 16th. A great visual and informative presentation was given
to those present by Bruce Whittington, Seabird Survival Program Co-Ordinator.
Bruce heightened our awareness of “do’s” and “don’ts”
when we’re around birds, on land and sea. He shared his knowledge
and identified many birds common to the West Coast. Brochures will be
made available to Squadron members in the near future and one can obtain
a copy at the June 5th Change of Watch Dinner.
Please note on your calendar that April 19th is our Annual General Meeting.
Guest speaker will be announced at a later date so check your Mainsheet
and our Website!

3rd Annual Fun Golf
Sunday,
April 4, 2004 was a golfer’s dream of a day with sunny skies, a
light breeze, and a course in great condition.
There were 18 Royal City Squadron members and friends who gathered under
ideal conditions to enjoy the 3rd annual Fun Golf. Non-golfing spouses
joined the group for dinner in the Clubhouse of Country Meadows Golf Course
and amid much bantering about the prowess of (or lack of) individual golfers,
and an enjoyable dinner, participants shared in prizes and a good time.
The invitation is already being extended to members and students for
the 2005 get-together. Your Squadron looks forward to an even larger group
at that time.

National Safe Boating Week
Five Top Tips for Boating Safety
Provided by the National
Safe Boating Council*
These five simple steps will dramatically reduce your chances
of being hurt or killed in a boating accident.
#1. WEAR YOUR LIFE JACKET!
Most people who are killed while pleasure boating drown—and most
people who drown are not wearing a life jacket. When you capsize, collide,
or fall overboard, there is rarely time to get to a stowed life jacket.
Modern life jackets are smaller and more comfortable making it easier
than ever to "Wear It!" at all times.
#2. STAY SOBER IN YOUR BOAT!*
An operator with a blood alcohol content above .10—(equivalent
to consuming 5 beers in one hour for the average 180-lb. male)—is
ten times more likely to die in a boating accident than an operator with
zero blood alcohol. Stressors such as sun, vibration, noise, and other
environmental elements affect the body more when you consume alcohol.
Boating while impaired is an offence under the Criminal Code of Canada.
Operators with more than 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres
of blood are liable to be fined
#3. TAKE A SAFE BOATING COURSE!*
Seventy percent of recreational boating accidents are caused by factors
that are controlled by the boat’s operator—such as failure
to pay attention, carelessness, recklessness, inexperience, excessive
speed, and failure to watch for hazards. Boating safety courses are available,
inexpensive, and quick—a great way for you to learn safety and the
rules of the road.

#4. GET YOUR BOAT CHECKED!*
A Pleasure Craft Courtesy Check (also known as a Courtesy Examination)
is a FREE service provided by the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary to assist
you, the owner/operator of a small craft (up to 65’ or 20m), in
maintaining your vessel’s safety equipment at standards acceptable
to the marine environment.
For more information about this free service, please see http://www.ccga-pacific.org/c-safety_03.html.
#5. BE AWARE OF CARBON MONOXIDE!
All boat engines produce Carbon Monoxide (CO)—an odorless, colorless,
poisonous gas that can kill you in a matter of minutes. Boaters are killed
every year because of improper cabin ventilation, poorly maintained equipment,
and careless behavior. You do not have to be inside the boat to be at
risk. Boaters have died from exposure on the swim platforms of their boats
and in other areas where CO exhaust may accumulate or be emitted. Be aware
of the early symptoms (irritated eyes, headache, nausea, weakness, and
dizziness), and use CO detectors on your boat.

Change of Watch and Graduation Dinner
Royal City Squadron members and families were out in record numbers
for the 47th annual Change of Watch dinner and ceremonies. Thanks to Past
District Commander, Norm Headrick and Mrs. Headrick, who were able to
join us and to participate in congratulating our graduates and the Bridge.
The event was held June 5th at the Executive Plaza Hotel in Coquitlam
and once again, many businesses were very generous with door prize donations
that always round off the evening. Please support these businesses as
they have supported us. Most of them are inundated annually with requests
such as ours and each year, they come through with great products and
services to enhance our evening. Congratulations to our winners!
Your new Bridge was inducted the same evening and was sworn in to continue
their role to promote Safe Boating through education in the Boating Courses
and to create and maintain a relaxed atmosphere for members to socialize
and network.
Have a safe and happy boating summer!

Royal City Squadron's Second Annual (Again) Fish Fry 2004
We were blessed with perfect weather on Sunday, September 26th and yes,
again the power of teamwork and our camaraderie really shone through during
preparation, execution and appreciation!
We also had a great attendance with 65 adults and 7 children comprised
of Squadron members, family and friends!
The “Advance Team” of potato and dish preparation experts
assembled at Harold Wright’s residence the evening before to do
their thing.
The “Royal Team” started to assemble at Queen’s Park
at noon on the 26th to handle the large task of set-up and prep for the
event. The hardworking “Fry Team” of Al Cumiford, Harold Wright,
and Eleanor Hashimoto were ready to serve around 3:00 p.m. as forecast.
Many, many thanks to this team for a job well done. However, it was reported
that by accident, and due to “getting the feel of the burners”,
the first few pieces of fish evolved as a completely new cuisine ~ “Cajun
Sushi”. Emeril has nothing on these folks!
Our thanks to Stan Giles, Jr. for the generous loan of your fry equipment
for the event and many, many thanks to the preparation experts, assisters,
servers, gophers, and clean-up crew. Everyone’s efforts are certainly
appreciated and we were pleased to have the participation of new Squadron
members, Menno and Rosemary Bos, John Otten, and Bruce Whittlesea who
participated as members of our phoning committee.
Thanks again to everyone who came out to enjoy a fabulous September day
with their fellow Squadron members, family and friends. We hope you enjoyed
the fish and we look forward to seeing you next year.
