National Safe Boating Week
Five Top Tips for Boating Safety
Provided by the National
Safe Boating Council* These five simple steps will
dramatically reduce your chances of being hurt or killed in a boating
accident.
#1. WEAR YOUR LIFE JACKET!
Most people who are killed while pleasure boating drown—and most
people who drown are not wearing a life jacket. When you capsize, collide,
or fall overboard, there is rarely time to get to a stowed life jacket.
Modern life jackets are smaller and more comfortable making it easier
than ever to "Wear It!" at all times.
#2. STAY SOBER IN YOUR BOAT!*
An operator with a blood alcohol content above .10—(equivalent
to consuming 5 beers in one hour for the average 180-lb. male)—is
ten times more likely to die in a boating accident than an operator with
zero blood alcohol. Stressors such as sun, vibration, noise, and other
environmental elements affect the body more when you consume alcohol.
Boating while impaired is an offence under the Criminal Code of Canada.
Operators with more than 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres
of blood are liable to be fined
#3. TAKE A SAFE BOATING COURSE!*
Seventy percent of recreational boating accidents are caused by factors
that are controlled by the boat’s operator—such as failure
to pay attention, carelessness, recklessness, inexperience, excessive
speed, and failure to watch for hazards. Boating safety courses are available,
inexpensive, and quick—a great way for you to learn safety and the
rules of the road.

#4. GET YOUR BOAT CHECKED!*
A Pleasure Craft Courtesy Check (also known as a Courtesy Examination)
is a FREE service provided by the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary to assist
you, the owner/operator of a small craft (up to 65’ or 20m), in
maintaining your vessel’s safety equipment at standards acceptable
to the marine environment.
For more information about this free service, please see http://www.ccga-pacific.org/c-safety_03.html.
#5. BE AWARE OF CARBON MONOXIDE!
All boat engines produce Carbon Monoxide (CO)—an odorless, colorless,
poisonous gas that can kill you in a matter of minutes. Boaters are killed
every year because of improper cabin ventilation, poorly maintained equipment,
and careless behavior. You do not have to be inside the boat to be at
risk. Boaters have died from exposure on the swim platforms of their boats
and in other areas where CO exhaust may accumulate or be emitted. Be aware
of the early symptoms (irritated eyes, headache, nausea, weakness, and
dizziness), and use CO detectors on your boat.

Pitt Lake Cruise

The RCS Annual Pitt River Cruise held on 03-05 June 05, is to be remembered
for many reasons and for some, perhaps for many years.
It was well supported by members & friends of the Squadron &
in all, some 13 & ½ boats & crew enjoyed the hospitality
of Ran & Ally, at Christian Cove Marina.
As usual, the Humming Birds provided one of natures most beautiful spectacles
anyone could wish to witness. Numerous species were seen feeding throughout
the three days spent at the Marina. What a sight.
Fish were plentiful but not easy to catch, as big Don learned, after
he had landed a prize dinner & had placed it in a bucket. The problem
was the dinner decided it wasn’t going to stay… for dinner,
& flipped out of the bucket back into the pond!
The moral of this story is……get a bigger bucket…with
a lid!!!

The weather cooperated & showed us just how good & bad it can
get, but it did not dampen the spirits of the members & family pets.
A great steak BBQ dinner & a Weenie Roast were enjoyed by all, thanks
to the singular efforts of the master of NO HURRY, (who shall remain nameless)
& who also arranged for the accommodation at the marina.
Olive & Al, shared their accommodation with the steward from NO HURRY,
and assured the writer that they had had wonderful service during their
stay! The steward is currently on leave & could not be contacted.

Crew who signed on the NO HURRY, were told to provide their own PFD. This
picture will confirm the strict requirements placed on the crew…
Check your Mainsheet newsletter for
all RCS events & support your squadron
by your participation. It really does help.

3rd Annual Fish Fry
Fifty-six adults and three children enjoyed a meal of fresh ling cod
and chips at the Picnic Pavillion in Queens Park on Sunday afternoon,
September 25th. Those with hearty appetites were encouraged to have seconds,
and even thirds! It seemed that everyone agreed that the fresh fish was
soooo good this year!
The weather was perfect for the time of year enabling a “three
dimensional” bocce game to be played! It sure took some getting-used-to
the slopes as the players would attest.
Once again, your volunteers excelled themselves. Hats off to the Prep
Team, the Cook Team, Servers, Clean-up Crew and all those who assisted.
A special thanks to Harold Wright who procured the supplies, and also
to Stan and Marlene Giles for the loan of their cooking equipment.
To those members who were not able to attend this successful event, we
look forward to seeing you next year!
