Bent Prop Award

Your Commander is seeking a possible candidate for this prestigious award which could be presented at our May 13th Change of Watch to an unsuspecting member.

There are many stories “out there” of boating no-no’s, hilarious mishaps, and some not so hilarious.

Would you squeal on a fellow member? On your spouse? You darned right!

Send your story to Eleanor Hashimoto at ehashi@telus.net or by fax (604) 540-0852 complete with a detailed description of the happening. It must be a true occurrence.

A panel of judges will then make a selection of a worthy recipient.

National Safe Boating Week
Five Top Tips for Boating Safety

Provided by the National Safe Boating Council*

These five simple steps will dramatically reduce your chances of being hurt or killed in a boating accident.

#1. WEAR YOUR LIFE JACKET!

Most people who are killed while pleasure boating drown—and most people who drown are not wearing a life jacket. When you capsize, collide, or fall overboard, there is rarely time to get to a stowed life jacket. Modern life jackets are smaller and more comfortable making it easier than ever to "Wear It!" at all times.

#2. STAY SOBER IN YOUR BOAT!*

An operator with a blood alcohol content above .10—(equivalent to consuming 5 beers in one hour for the average 180-lb. male)—is ten times more likely to die in a boating accident than an operator with zero blood alcohol. Stressors such as sun, vibration, noise, and other environmental elements affect the body more when you consume alcohol.

Boating while impaired is an offence under the Criminal Code of Canada. Operators with more than 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood are liable to be fined

#3. TAKE A SAFE BOATING COURSE!*

Seventy percent of recreational boating accidents are caused by factors that are controlled by the boat’s operator—such as failure to pay attention, carelessness, recklessness, inexperience, excessive speed, and failure to watch for hazards. Boating safety courses are available, inexpensive, and quick—a great way for you to learn safety and the rules of the road.

Boating Courses offered by Royal City Squadron .

#4. GET YOUR BOAT CHECKED!*

A Pleasure Craft Courtesy Check (also known as a Courtesy Examination) is a FREE service provided by the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary to assist you, the owner/operator of a small craft (up to 65’ or 20m), in maintaining your vessel’s safety equipment at standards acceptable to the marine environment.

For more information about this free service, please see http://www.ccga-pacific.org/c-safety_03.html.

#5. BE AWARE OF CARBON MONOXIDE!

All boat engines produce Carbon Monoxide (CO)—an odorless, colorless, poisonous gas that can kill you in a matter of minutes. Boaters are killed every year because of improper cabin ventilation, poorly maintained equipment, and careless behavior. You do not have to be inside the boat to be at risk. Boaters have died from exposure on the swim platforms of their boats and in other areas where CO exhaust may accumulate or be emitted. Be aware of the early symptoms (irritated eyes, headache, nausea, weakness, and dizziness), and use CO detectors on your boat.

*Some modifications were made to provide Canadian content.

as he will need to purchase enough food for all for the BBQ and weiner roast.

WOW! What a blast it was at Christian Cove on Pitt Lake!

We could not have asked for better weather!

A great time, mingling with friends and making new ones, while enjoying good food, drinks and the serene surroundings.

Most gathered around the fire in the evenings, joking and having fun. Some braver individuals went for a cool dip in the lake after sitting in the hot tub. We won’t mention any names.

Many of those who attended had an experience operating and or being a passenger on the infamous Wave runner.

You all remember the lightening bolt on water….lol.

Thanks to John and Sue for bringing it along for all to enjoy.

Bocce, Bocce, Bocce, that is quite the game. Well organized, and tons of fun. Thank you to those who were dedicated to making it such a good time for everyone. Congratulations, goes out to Sharon Allman and Iz Goto they are the new Bocce Champions for 2006.

Thanks to those who prepared the awesome dishes for the potluck dinner Friday evening. The barbequed steak and salmon with all the trimmings on Saturday were prepared to perfection.

Sunday we all had hot dogs cooked over the open fire, again with all the trimmings. Sue Ottens blessed some of us with her delicious Sambuca prawns.

Safe and happy summer boating to all, see you in September!

One Hour Harrison Lake Tour

Through Shoreline Tours & Charters (website: shorelinetours.net) we have booked a tour of Harrison Lake. For any members who wish to take part please see the information below. Space is limited so please book early to reserve your spot today. After the cruise, lunch and 9 holes of golf are available for additional cost for those who feel up to it.

Where: Meet at the marina in front of Harrison Lake Hotel
  When: Saturday September 16, 2006. 1100hrs (11:00am)
Contact: Eleanor Hashimoto (604) 522-3448 or at ehashi@telus.net
Cost: $11.00 per person (or $22.00 pp if extended to 2-hr. tour)
For minimum 30-36 persons; a bit more if less than 30.

On a glorious Saturday, September 16th morning @1100, twenty-two of us assembled at the marina in front of the Harrison Lake Resort & Spa and boarded the MV Laroan for a mini cruise on Harrison Lake.

We passed the famous Sand Castle exhibits on Harrison Beach, Killer’s Cove marina, and some nice waterfront estates before swinging over to Echo Island, and then heading back to the marina.

Following the cruise, we all went to the Old Settler Pub for drinks and a great lunch with a chance for further conversation and camaraderie.

Finally, nine of us went to the Harrison Golf Course to chase that little white ball around for 9-holes before departing for home.

The weather gods were certainly with us for this fun outing, and with great company it was agreed that we all had an enjoyable time and that we should have more squadron outings. (At the marina there were little round bumper boats – maybe a little competitive racing next time??). If anyone has any ideas for similar get-togethers, please contact Eleanor at (604) 522-3448, or myself at (604) 540-0852.

Respectfully submitted,
Lt/C Keith Davies

  Cost: Adults - $8.00

For those members who were unable to attend our September 24th annual Fish Fry – you missed a good one! What a fabulous afternoon of great weather coupled with the terrific Queens Park location in the woods.

58 members, their families and guests sat down to a great meal of fresh ling cod supplied through member, Ray Manseau and expertly prepared by “The F/F TEAM”, together with our signature French fries and for the first time, a nice coleslaw. General reaction was that “this was the best fish ever”! Thanks, Ray.

As always, your Bridge works very hard behind and at the scenes to provide these events. Special thanks to those members who shopped, prepared, cooked, served, and cleaned up for this special “do”.

We look forward to seeing everyone next year as well as to our other events throughout the year.

Lt/C Keith Davies
