Your Commander is seeking a possible candidate for this prestigious award which could be presented at our May 12th Change of Watch to an unsuspecting member.
There are many stories “out there” of boating no-no’s, hilarious mishaps, and some not so hilarious.
Would you squeal on a fellow member? On your spouse? You darned right!
Send your story to Eleanor Hashimoto at ehashi@telus.net or by fax (604) 540-0852 complete with a detailed description of the happening. It must be a true occurrence.
A panel of judges will then make a selection of a worthy recipient.
These five simple steps will dramatically reduce your chances of being hurt or killed in a boating accident.
#1. WEAR YOUR LIFE JACKET!
Most people who are killed while pleasure boating drown—and most
people who drown are not wearing a life jacket. When you capsize, collide,
or fall overboard, there is rarely time to get to a stowed life jacket.
Modern life jackets are smaller and more comfortable making it easier
than ever to "Wear It!" at all times.
#2. STAY SOBER IN YOUR BOAT!*
An operator with a blood alcohol content above .10—(equivalent to consuming 5 beers in one hour for the average 180-lb. male)—is ten times more likely to die in a boating accident than an operator with zero blood alcohol. Stressors such as sun, vibration, noise, and other environmental elements affect the body more when you consume alcohol.
Boating while impaired is an offence under the Criminal Code of Canada. Operators with more than 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood are liable to be fined
#3. TAKE A SAFE BOATING COURSE!*
Seventy percent of recreational boating accidents are caused by factors that are controlled by the boat’s operator—such as failure to pay attention, carelessness, recklessness, inexperience, excessive speed, and failure to watch for hazards. Boating safety courses are available, inexpensive, and quick—a great way for you to learn safety and the rules of the road.

#4. GET YOUR BOAT CHECKED!*
A Pleasure Craft Courtesy Check (also known as a Courtesy Examination) is a FREE service provided by the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary to assist you, the owner/operator of a small craft (up to 65’ or 20m), in maintaining your vessel’s safety equipment at standards acceptable to the marine environment.
For more information about this free service, please see http://www.ccga-pacific.org/c-safety_03.html.
#5. BE AWARE OF CARBON MONOXIDE!
All boat engines produce Carbon Monoxide (CO)—an odorless, colorless,
poisonous gas that can kill you in a matter of minutes. Boaters are killed
every year because of improper cabin ventilation, poorly maintained equipment,
and careless behavior. You do not have to be inside the boat to be at
risk. Boaters have died from exposure on the swim platforms of their boats
and in other areas where CO exhaust may accumulate or be emitted. Be aware
of the early symptoms (irritated eyes, headache, nausea, weakness, and
dizziness), and use CO detectors on your boat.
*Some modifications were made to provide Canadian content.

For our 5th annual Fish Fry, the weather gods smiled on us.
On a beautiful sunny afternoon, 67 Royal City Squadron members, family
and friends sat down and enjoyed scrumptious ling cod (thanks to member,
Ray Manseau!), tasty fries and coleslaw. Many positive comments were received
about the food quality.
It was great to see attendees from our current Boating Course, and our
friend Joe Reid and his family. Way to go, Joe, for making the trip down
from Roberts Creek on the Sunshine Coast!
Recognized by Commander Keith were Glen Blake, PMD Commander and also
RCS former Commander, along with Janet Laninga who was RCS’ first
lady Commander together with Past Commanders, Pat Miles, John Neilson,
and Eleanor Hashimoto.
After the meal, bottles of select vintages from Chateaux Blake and Hashimoto,
and Caves d’Hudspeth were drawn for door prizes. (At the time of
writing, the recipients were still in good health!).
Lastly but certainly not least, many, many thanks to the volunteers who
did the “heavy lifting”. The fish and chips are prepared the
day before the Fish Fry which takes about 3 hours; there was shopping
for supplies which takes another 2-3 hours; the set-up and cooking about
3 hours; and then the clean up. The final pot was scrubbed out about 8:00
p.m. after the event.
Thanks to all who attended to support our Squadron, and to everyone that
participated in the preparation of this (with considerable efforts) annual
event!
Respectfully submitted by
Keith Davies, Commander
